TheCDAdelegates recommended that VAC
include in its contractswith LTC facilities
theminimum requirements of anoral
health screeningupon admission, an annual
examinationby adentist, adailymouth care
plan, and suitable infrastructure to support
the appropriatedeliveryof neededdental
care. “We are thrilled that severalMPs
respondedpositively toour call to action
andoffered tohelp immediatelyby reaching
out to their relevantministers and caucus
colleagues,” addsDr. Raddall.
Theeventwas also anoccasion tohave
fruitful discussionswithMinister of Health
RonaAmbrose. “ThemeetingwithMinister
Ambrosewas particularlypositive,” says
Dr. Nicoll. “Shewas very appreciativeof
CDA’s responsiveness onmany issues; she
evenmentioned thatwe stand as agood
example for ourwillingness tounderstand
and address issueswithprescriptiondrug
abuse.” CDAdelegates covered several topics
withMinister Ambrose, and she committed
to raising the issueof oral health standards
for veterans in LTC facilitieswithMinister of
VeteranAffairs ErinO’Toole.
Furthermore, theCDAdelegation thanked
Minister Ambrose for theopportunity to
participate in several roundtablemeetings
this past year, including thoseonhealth
care innovation, prescriptiondrug abuse,
anddomestic violence and child abuse.
“Byhaving representation at thosemeetings,
CDA canensure that theoral health care
needs of theCanadianpopulation are
understoodbygovernment andother
relevant stakeholders, and that they are
taken into considerationwhendeveloping
policies and initiatives,” concludes
Dr. Raddall.
