UNEF–SuezCanal (1956–67)
As theKoreaoperationwas coming toanend,
hostilitiesbetweenEgypt and Israel in1956
threatened todisrupt the freedomof navigation
through theSuezCanal, forcing theUnitedNations
todeployapolice force. TheRCDC, aspartof the
Canadiancontribution to thecampaign,wouldbe
calledupononcemore toassist inprovidingdental
support to thisoperation, entitledUnitedNation
EmergencyForce (UNEF)MiddleEast. Thismission
ran from1956 to1967.
NATO inEurope
FollowingWWII, 27CanadianFieldDental
Detachment supportedCanada’s contribution to
theNorthAtlanticTreatyOrganization (NATO).
Eighty-sevenofficersand141non-commissioned
members servedwith thedental unit, providing
service tobrigadepersonnel and their families. 35
FieldDentalUnithadclinics inMetzandMarville in
France, and inZweibrüchenandBaden-Soellingen
inGermany. In1967, allNATObases inFrancewere
closed, and35FieldDentalUnitmoved toLahr,
Germany.
In1983, 35FieldDentalUnit, now renamed35
DentalUnit, operateddental clinics inLahr and in
Baden-Soellingen,Germany. Theclinic inLahr also
hadafleetofmobiledental clinics. AfterCanada
withdrew these formations fromGermany in
1994, dental detachments remainedat Supreme
HeadquartersAlliedPowersEurope (SHAPE) in
Casteau, Belgium, and inGeilenkirchen,Germany,
where theycontinue toprovidedental care today
toCanadianmilitarymembersand their families
a
CDA isplayingacentralrole incommemoratingthe100th
anniversaryoftheRCDC inMay2015,reflectingCDA’srole in
establishingamilitarydentalservice inCanadaandtheclose
partnershipbetweenCDAandRCDCsincethattime.
