my son for somedentalwork—it’s a real familybusiness!”
For fledglingdentists likehis son, Dr. Croutzeadvisespatiencewhen it comes
toestablishing their careers. “There’s a lot of pressureonyoungprofessionals to
succeedearly. When I startedout, I felt like I had toachieveanumber of things
byacertainpoint andyoudon’t know if it’s ever going tohappen,” he recalls.
“If I couldgoback, myattitudewouldbedifferent in termsof not putting that
unrealisticpressureonmyself to succeed soquickly. That’s theadvice I try to
givemychildren: bepatientwithyourself and itwillworkout.”
Outsideof dentistry, Dr. Croutzedoesn’t currentlyhave time for the
scoresof hobbiesheused toenjoy—flyinghisCessna172, sailing,
scubadiving, flyfishing, hunting, and skiing. “I used tobrag that I

somethingand Iwill tell you that I’vedone it!” he laughs. “But
the fact is, there is a lot of commitment to this joband that takes
up time. I’m tellingpeople togetmore involved inorganized
dentistry, but towhat extent? I bought abeautiful canoeand
haven’t put it in thewater; I’vegivenupona lot of things. It’s a
trade-off, but this iswhat I doand I love it.”
