1963–1994
In1963, Canadaofferedmilitary support to theUnited
Nations PeacekeepingForce inCyprus (UNFICYP). The
first dental detachment arrived in thecapital cityof
Nicosia in1964.
In1967, theCanadiancontingentmoved from the
batteredand rusted tinhutsof TroodosCamp to the
former Royal Air ForceStation inNicosia. Thedental
detachmentwas continuously staffeduntil 1994,
when theCanadianbattalionwaswithdrawn.
Theonlyother dental teamattached toUNFICYP
was from theBritishRoyal ArmyDental Corps. Itwas
commonpractice for the two teams toalternate their
on-call responsibilities andcover eachother’spatients
duringabsencesdue to leaveor travel. TheCanadian
teamalsoprovidedemergencydental care toother
troopcontingents, including those fromAustriaand
Denmark.

CDA isplayingacentralrole incommemoratingthe100th
anniversaryoftheRCDC inMay2015,reflectingCDA’srole
played inestablishingamilitarydentalservice inCanadaand
theclosepartnershipbetweenCDAandRCDCsincethattime.
