Beginning this fall, eachdental school
will host an event to introduce incoming
students toFCDSAand let themknow
how to get involved.
According toDr.Munsie, one issue that unites
dental students fromall schools is access to
care, where “there really is apossibility that
students couldmakeadifference.” Through
FCDSA, some schools learnedabout an
initiative for improving theoral healthcare
of peoplewith special needs. “Wewereable
to spread thewordaboutOral Health, Total
Health, and its annual SharingSmilesDay (a
funandeducational day that bringsdental
anddental hygiene students togetherwith
personswith special needs),” saysDr.Munsie.
“Threedental schoolshadn’t heardofOral
Health, Total Healthbefore, but it looks like
theyarenowonboard. TheFederation
allows conversations like that tohappen,”
sheadds.
As FCDSAestablishes itsnetworkwithin
organizeddentistry, newconnections
arebeingmadewithother national
organizations, suchas theAssociationof
CanadianFacultiesofDentistry, and learning
fromothers, suchasCDA, CDSPI, theNational
Dental ExaminingBoard (NDEB) and the
AmericanStudentDental Association.
CDA, inparticular, hasbeena strongFCDSA
supporter andcontinues tohost the
secretariat for the federation. “CDAbrought
forward the ideaof a student federation
andhelpedus establishourselves in2012,”
explainsDr.Munsie. “Theyareour greatest
support.”
At the recentAGM, anagreementwith
NDEBwas adopted toensuremutual
representationat annualmeetings.
FCDSAalsoagreed todistribute information
to students about theNDEBcertification
process. “Studentshadconcerns about the
highcost of theNDEBprogram,” explains
Dr.Munsie. “Afterworkingwith theNDEB,
wewereable toexplain to students that
NDEB isnon-profit, and thecost of theexam
is trulywhat is required to securelyand fairly
administer theexam.”
“This is an important stage inFCDSA’s
history,” saysMr. Boulos. “We’vecomea long
way sinceestablishing in2012butmuch
more remains tobedone.”
