DENTISTRYLEADERS
Dr. Charles Baker of Pickering, Ontario, passed awayon
November 8, 2014. Hewas 70 years old.
Dr. Baker graduated from theUniversityofManitoba
facultyof dentistry in1968 and later specialized in
radiology at theUniversityof Toronto.
Dr. Baker had a distinguished career in various capacities
in academia. He was dean of the College of Dentistry at
the University on Saskatchewan in 2000–04, at a time
when the future of its dentistry programwas unclear due
to high costs. Under Dr. Baker’s leadership, a differential
fee structurewas introduced to keep the program viable.
During the same period, he also served as acting dean
of USask’s College of Medicine (2001–02). Before joining
USask, Dr. Baker was professor of oral health sciences
and acting assistant dean at the University of Alberta
faculty of medicine and dentistry. Dr. Baker cared dearly
for the profession, which lead him to become a founding
member and president of the Canadian Academy of Oral
and Maxillofacial Radiology. He also served as president
and examiner-in-chief of the Royal College of Dentists of
Canada. Hewas recognizedby theUniversity of Manitoba
beingnamed recipientof theAlumni ofDistinctionhonour
in2007.
Dr. Baker is survived by his wife Helen and children and
stepchildren Stephanie, Tony, Lauren, Jay, Adele and
Emma.

Dr. Harold Beach of Ottawa passed away on April 1, 2015,
at the ageof 102.
A 1937 graduate from the University of Toronto, Dr. Beach
first established his dental practice in Pembroke, Ontario,
before serving overseas in the Canadian Dental Corps
during the SecondWorldWar. Upon his return to Canada,
he relocatedhis practice toOttawa.
Dr. Beach’s sense of duty was not limited to military
matters. He put his heart and soul into advancing the
dental profession and giving back to society at the local,
provincial and national levels. He was actively involved
with the Ottawa Dental Society, serving as its president,
a member of its fluoridation committee, and chair of its
children’s dental health day committee. He also served
as president and secretary of the Eastern Ontario Dental
Association, president of theOntarioDental Association in
1965–66, and he was the inaugural registrar-secretary of
theNational Dental ExaminationBoard. Dr. Beachwas also
named a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and
the International Collegeof Dentists.
Inhis spare time, Dr. Beachwas anavid sailor. Healso loved
playing the trombone (which he first learned to play in
his 90s!) andwas amember of the Ottawa NewHorizons
Band. Dr. Beach is survivedbyhis son, Norman.
