Professional Incorporation and the Unique Identification Number – Changes effective December 15, 2011.
There has been a long-standing practice related to CDAnet and e-claims where a dentist's Unique Identification Number (UIN) would reflect whether the dentist is professionally incorporated or not. Maintaining this process meant that when a dentist became incorporated after having subscribed to CDAnet, the UIN would have to be changed. This change often resulted in disruption for sending claims for a week or two until all the systems involved were updated with the new UIN.
When this process was originally implemented it was anticipated this would be useful information for processing claims. However, a recent survey of all the provincial dental associations, regulators and insurance carriers has found that this information is not used for claims processing, and there is no longer a need for the UIN to reflect the incorporation status of a dentist.
For this reason, effective December 15, 2011, CDAnet will no longer change the UIN to reflect incorporation status, and will remove the dentist incorporation status from the CDAnet subscription agreement. All existing UINs will remain as they are as of December 15th. UINs that currently begin with a "5" or "6" to reflect incorporation will remain as they are to avoid the disruption of changing them. Going forward, new UINs will not begin with either a "5" or "6". This change in procedure at CDAnet does not require any changes in dental offices with the exception that when a dentist becomes incorporated, there is no longer a need to inform CDAnet.
