Oral Health Promotion Award

The Oral Health Promotion Award recognizes individuals or organizations that seek to improve the oral health of Canadians through oral health promotion. This year, the award was presented to the Ontario Dental Association's Oral Health Strategy and Happy Teeth: Happy Children - An Oral Health Promotion Program for an Urban Minority Population of Preschool Children in British Columbia.

Phase one of the ODA's Oral Health Strategy is the Oral Cancer Awareness Campaign, launched in June 2003. This integrated public relations campaign is aimed at raising awareness of the link between oral health and overall health. The message, which focused on the role of the dentist in detecting oral cancer in the early stages, reached millions of Ontarians through a comprehensive media campaign.

Dr. T. Wong and Dr. R. Harrison

The Happy Teeth: Happy Children program is the brainchild of Dr. Rosamund Harrison and Dr. Tracy Wong of Vancouver. It began in 1994, when the Vietnamese immigrant population surged in B.C. Reports from service providers in Vancouver's inner city public health clinics indicated that preschool Vietnamese children had extensive dental treatment needs that were not being met.

The program's aim was to promote improved oral health by providing one-to-one counseling to Vietnamese mothers during well-baby visits to a local health clinic. Happy Teeth: Happy Children has since been made available to mothers from other cultural groups.
