Roundtableparticipants included representatives frombothhumanandanimal
health stakeholder groups,whobrought forward their respectivepriorities, roles and
responsibilities in tacklingantimicrobial resistance. Dr. EuanSwan, CDAmanager of
dental programs, attended theevent onbehalf of theAssociation.
“The focusof the roundtablewas antimicrobial resistance
stewardship,whichencompasses theprudent useof
antimicrobials tomaintain theeffectivenessof existing
treatments through infectionpreventionandcontrol
guidelines; educationandawareness; regulations and
oversight; andbiosecuritypractices at the farm level,”
saysDr. Swan.
When sharingareasof concernamongparticipants,
Dr. Swanexplained that “a keypriority for CDA is the
appropriateuseof antibiotics in themanagement of
all dental patients, and inparticular thosewith joint
replacements andheart complications.”Aproposedaction
toaddress this issue is theeducationof dentists, orthopedic
surgeons, cardiologists and thepubliconappropriate
antibioticuse.
Muchof thediscussion focusedonanimal healthand theagri-food industry, as theuseof
antibiotics in livestockhasbeenunder scrutiny for several years.
Federal announcements
MinisterAmbroseused theMarchevent tounveil thegovernment’snewFederal
ActionPlanonAntimicrobial ResistanceandUse, and to launch theCanadian
Antimicrobial ResistanceSurveillanceSystem (CARSS). TheCanadiangovernment also
committed to investing$250,000 (US) to support aWorldBank studyon theeconomic
impact of antimicrobial resistance.
TheActionPlanbuildson theFederal Framework forAction released in2014,which
“mapsouts acoordinated, collaborative federal approach to responding to the threat
of antimicrobial resistance.” Efforts are focusedon threeactivitypillars: surveillance,
stewardshipand innovation.

tackleantimicrobial resistanceandensure themedicinesCanadians areusingcontinue
tobe safeandeffective,”mentionedMinisterAmbrose inanews release following the
roundtable.
