HasNCOHRplayeda role inhelpingyou
developyour career?
During thefirstNCOHRworkshopsheldat the
SchulichSchool ofMedicineandDentistry in
2013, ImetwithDr.Michael Glogauer from
theUniversityof Toronto,who is aperiodontal
specialist. I stayed in touchwithhimandhe
recentlyofferedmeapostdoctoral fellowship
position. Through the twoNCOHRworkshops
I’veattended, I expandedmynetworkandhad
theopportunity tobepart of theorganizing
committee for theNCOHRworkshop that took
placeat theUniversityof Alberta this summer.
What’snext foryou?
Iwill be startingmypostdoctoral fellowshipat
theUniversityof TorontowithDr. Glogauer. In
the future, I hope toworkas aclinician-scientist
andplaya role inacademia. I alsowant to stay
affiliatedwithNCOHR inwhatever capacity
possible—it hasplayedan important role in
developingmycareer—andonedaybepart of
the steeringcommittee.
Anyadvice for colleaguesconsideringa
career in research?
Only that acareer inacademia is extremely
challengingandcompetitive. Do itwithall your
heart andbelieve inyour abilities. There is aneed
for youngdentists topursue research inCanada.
