At the requestof theB.C. government inAugust2003,
themilitary responded to forest fires in theOkanagan
Valley. At theheightof thecrisis, about800fireswere
burningand tensof thousandsofpeoplehadbeen
orderedoutof theirhomes.OperationPEREGRINE
involvedmore than2,200CanadianForcespersonnel,
who fought5of theworst firesover a45-dayperiod.

fromEdmonton—MajorCostaBatsos, Sergeant Sylvie
Marcoux,MasterCorporalAndreaPlante, andCorporal
NathalieSauvageau—providedemergencydental
services todeployedCAFpersonnel. To facilitateaccess
to treatment, themobiledental clinicwascentrally
located tomanyof thefires.Whennotproviding
emergencydental care, thedental team transported
medical patients to theFieldAmbulance location.
CanadianHealthMeasures
Survey, 2007-09
In2007,HealthCanada’sCanadianHealthMeasures
Survey (CHMS) includedclinical indicatorsof oral health
inanational survey for thefirst time inover 30years.
1DentalUnitprovided14dental officers to serveas
calibratedexaminers, carryingoutoral examinations for
theCHMS’ oral healthcomponent. In total, dental
officersgatheredvaluableclinical dataonover 6,000
Canadiansat15 sites. In2009, theRCDC receivedCDA’s
OralHealthPromotionAward in recognitionof their
contribution.

Thedental sectionofOperationNANOOKwas tasked
withadoublemandate: providedental support to the
over 500personnel onexerciseandprovidedental
treatment toeligibleResoluteBay residents. Itmarked
thefirst timeanRCDCdental teamwasdeployed
toprovidedental care toCFmembers in theHigh
Arctic, and thefirstdental outreach initiativebetween
HealthCanadaand theGovernmentofNunavut that
involvedRCDCpersonnel. Thedental teamofCorporal
KellyZseder fromdental detachment Edmontonand
MajorRachel Jetté from1FieldAmbulanceEdmonton
deployed toResoluteBay in July2011.
OperationNANOOKalso involved trainingexercises
basedona scenarioof amajor airdisaster. These
activitieswere suddenly suspended inAugustwhen
the inboundFirstAir Flight6560crashed just2km from
camp.During the rescueefforts, thedental section
helpedcare for 3 injuredpassengersandcontributed to
thevictim identificationprocess.

CDA isplayingacentralrole incommemoratingthe100th
anniversaryoftheRCDC inMay2015,reflectingCDA’srole
inestablishingamilitarydentalservice inCanadaandtheclose
partnershipbetweenCDAandRCDCsincethattime.
