When properly performed, light curing of resin-based restorations produces better physical and
chemical properties of the restoration, stronger bonds between the restorationand tooth,
improved colour stabilityandahigher probability of a successful long-term clinical outcome.
Light curing performed incorrectly can result in premature failure of the restorationand
potentiallymore toothdecay, resulting in larger restorations thatmay require endodontic
treatment, or other costly procedures.Undercuring resin-basedfillings—by curing for an insufficient
length of time, improperly positioning the light curingunit (LCU) over the restoration, orusing
thewrong type ofLCU—is thought to contribute to the higher failure of resin-based restorations
placed in general dental offices compared to the resultsfrom controlled clinical trials.

international symposiumon light curing in
dentistrywasheldatDalhousieUniversity in
HalifaxonMay29–30, 2014. The symposium
was attendedby40 keyopinion leaders from
academiaand industrywhoworked together to
developaConsensus Statementwithadviceon
