Treatment
Common InitialTreatments
EarlyStage (<14DaysPostoperation)
1.
Reassure thepatient.
2.
Prescribeantibiotic if there is evidenceof infection:
usuallyamoxicillin500mg, t.i.d. for 3days is sufficient.
Confirm if previous antibiotichasbeenprescribedand
consider alternativedrug.
3.
Painmanagement: Prescribeanti-inflammatory
medication (ibuprofen400–600mg t.i.d. or q.i.d. for
4–5days) or acetaminophen-codeine-caffeine (one
tablet q. 4–6h. p.r.n. for 3–4days).
4.
Advise thepatient toperformminimal or no
mechanical brushingof the site.
5.
Start or continue touseantibacterialmouth rinse
for 7–10days (chlorhexidine0.12%).
6.
Contact aperiodontist, if required, toadviseabout
your and thepatient’s concerns.
7.
Followup in21–28days.
