Remembering Dentistry Leaders Dr. JamesStakiw D r . J ames S takiw O f V ictoria , B.C., P assed A way O n M arch 17, 2020. D r. Stakiw was a 1966 graduate of the faculty of dentistry at the University of Manitoba. He spent most of his professional career practising as a periodontist in London, Ontario, and showed a life‑long commitment to the profession and his community. Dr. Stakiw was a Fellow of the International College of Dentists (ICD). While maintaining his specialty practice, Dr. Stakiw was very much involved with the profession across the country. During his time in Ontario, Dr. Stakiw was an instructor at both St. Joseph’s Hospital and University Hospital in London, Ontario. He served as president of the London & District Dental Society and was an executive member of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO). Upon returning in Saskatoon, he taught at the University of Saskatchewan College of Dentistry, and was acting dean of Dentistry for two consecutive terms, from 2002 to 2006. Dr. Stakiw deeply cared about the community in which he lived. He served on the Boards of several organizations, including the Saskatoon and Provincial St. John Ambulance, the Provincial Canadian Forces Liaison Council, the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires North Saskatchewan Division and the United Services Institute of Saskatoon. Dr. Stakiw was proud of his time serving as an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel for the 16 (Saskatoon) Field Ambulance, Canadian Forces Health Services as well as a dental officer and a logistics officer in the Canadian Forces reserves with 22 (London) Service Battalion. He had a profound respect for the military. Remembering and honouring those who served for their country were a cause close to his heart. Dr. Stakiw was an accomplished pianist and talented gardener. He shared his love of music during his time as president of Orchestra London Canada. He is survived by his wife, Diane; three children, Susan, Lesley and Jill (daughter Laura was predeceased—Laura Stakiw Memorial Award at the School of Dentistry at Western University: westernconnect.ca/Stakiw ) ; six grandchildren, Nicole, James, Parker, Lochlan, Peri and Blake; and many other family members.
