Since they have the potential for tolerance and dependence, they should only be considered in consultation with the patient’s physician. Efficacy Some studies show that diazepam significantly reduces chronic jaw pain, 16 and that a 1-month regimen reduces pain associated with TMD. 67 However, other studies only found sleep improvement. 68 Adverse effects and drug interactions Adverse effects include tolerance and dependence. 66 The use of benzodiazepines for TMD has been discouraged because of reactions such as drowsiness, confusion, amnesia and impaired coordination. Abrupt discontinuation may result in withdrawal symptoms. Contraindications to their use include allergy, myasthenia gravis and acute narrow- angle glaucoma. 4 Many benzodiazepines interact with other drugs, as these medications are CYP 4503A4 substrates.
