Getting involved
Drs. Cottrell andBrodeurgedental
organizations and schools touse
their broad influence to inform their
members and studentsofways they
canget involvedand thebenefitsof
thesemissions. Theybelieve that if
schoolspartneredwithorganizations
tooffer suchprograms for students
at thebeginningof their careers, it
wouldenhanceandbroaden students’
perspectives andpositivelyaffect their
owncareers and theprofession.
They stronglyencourage their
colleagues toget involved inanyway

thecommunity that there isneed
everywhere—not just abroad. “You
don’t have togo toanother country,”
saysDr. Brode. “Therearemanyareas
of needhere inCanada. I thinkpeople
sometimes forget that youcanhelp
underserviced individuals in situations
of highneed right here inyour own
community.”
“Truehappiness comes fromhelping
other people,” saysDr. Cottrell. “There
isnothingnicer than seeingaperson
whohashad their dentition riddled
withcaries, and tobeable tohave
them look inamirror and seea
beautiful smileat theendof it. That’s
all thegratificationyoucouldever
