Medal ofHonour
TheMedal ofHonour is thehighestawardconferredbyCDA. It isgiven toadentist in recognitionofa lifetime
ofoutstanding serviceandprofessional achievement to thebenefitof thedental profession, thedental
communityand societyat large, and towhom significant changecanbeattributed. Thebreadth
and scopeofachievementare significant factors ingranting thisaward, asare the individual’s
contributions to thegoalsandobjectivesofCDA. Thisyear’s recipientwas
Dr.GeorgeZarb
of
Toronto.
Dr.GeorgeZarb is internationally
recognizedasoneof themost respected
clinical scholars inprosthodontics. Following
a longanddistinguishedacademiccareer,
he retired in2005asprofessor andheadof
prosthodontics in the facultyofdentistryat
theUniversityof Toronto.He is the recipientof
numerousnational and international awardsand
honours, including6honorarydoctorates, aswell
asHonoraryFellowships from theRoyal Collegeof
Dental Surgeonsof Englandand theRoyal College
of Surgeons in Ireland.Hehas thedistinctionof
receiving theAcademyofOsseointegration’s
BrånemarkOsseointegrationAward, theGoldMedal
of theAmericanProsthodonticSocietyandbeing
theonly recipientof all threeawardsgivenby the
GreaterNewYorkAcademyof Prosthodontics.
In2008, hewasmadeamemberof theOrderof
Canada, and in2009he received theNationalOrder
ofMerit from thePresidentofMalta. In2012, hewas
awarded theQueenElizabeth IIDiamond Jubilee
Medal.
It is a careerhighlight—nothing tops this sort of recognitionfrom theprofessional constituency I chose to
devotemy entire career to,”Dr.Zarb saidof his award. “Iamverygrateful toCDA for this.”

TheHonoraryMembershipaward isgiven toan individual (dentistornon-dentist)whohasmadeanoutstanding
contribution to thedentalprofession, thedental communityor theoralhealthofCanadiansoverasustained
periodof timeat theacademic, corporate, specialtysociety, council, commissionorcommittee level.An
outstandingcontributionat thenational level isaprincipleconsideration. Thebreadthandscopeof
achievement isasignificant factor indetermining thisaward. TheCDAHonoraryMembershipwas

ofHalifax.
Dr.William (Bill)MacInnishasheld
manyprominent positionsprovincially,
nationallyand internationally, including
deanof the facultyof dentistryatDalhousie
University, registrar of theDental Boardof
NovaScotia, president of theAssociationof
CanadianFacultiesofDentistry, andpresident
of the International CollegeofDentists. Hehas
alsowrittenabookondental law inCanadaand
served in theCanadianForces,wherehe retired
as LieutenantColonel and then later served in the
honorarycapacityof Colonel Commandant of
theDental Corps. Hehasbeenamentor, teacher,
advisor and friend toamultitudeof colleagues
and students. Hishonestyandpassion for quality
educationhavebeen thehallmarksof his career.
Theprofessionof dentistryhas beenverykind tome. Ithas providedmewitha richness of experiencebeyond
mydreams,” saidDr.MacInnis. “At the same time, Iam fullyaware that I couldnothavebeenable to succeed
without the trust, generosityandkindness thatmyfriends, familyand colleagueshaveprovidedmewithover
the years.”
